PLATFORM centre, in collaboration with WNDX, is pleased to announce a solo exhibition featuring the work of Denton Fredrickson (AB). Titled Horse Tolts and Palm Tree Boxers: A Study from Hafnarborg, the show runs from 04 – 06 October, 2019 with an opening reception scheduled for Friday 04 October at 7 PM.

Combining hand-drawn animation and collage with kinetic surfaces and projection mapping, the work explores themes of alienation and wonder through the lens of an automaton’s shadow play from a bathtub. This playfully absurd sketch began during a two-month Winter residency in Hafnarborg, Iceland.

Caught somewhere in-between folk and media art, Denton Fredrickson’s work invites experiential and contemplative interactions with sound, objects, and architectural space. The seductive lure of both old and new wonders, fantastic inventions, and absurd theories are familiar territories for Fredrickson. He investigates (and invents) their histories and representations in popular culture through research, collaboration, humour, and the practice of making. His recent interest in the intermingling of traditional, material-based processes with kinetics, electronics, and digital fabrication has led him to explore how speculative fiction can become awkwardly nestled within the everyday.

BIOGRAPHY

Fredrickson received his Master of Fine Arts (Sculpture and Media Art) from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2003. His work has been exhibited across North America, Europe, and Asia. He currently works out of Lethbridge, Alberta where he is an Associate Professor (Sculpture and Media Art) in the Art Department of the University of Lethbridge.
